The Linville Cove Viaduct is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in North America. It was completed in 1987 and was "one of the most elegant solutions to an environmentally formidable problem, yet designed by the hand of man." The viaduct was the last 7.5 miles completed of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Built at an elevation of 4100 ft, the engineers put the pilings in place, and then placed pre-made sections of the 1,243 foot long S curve in place. "So sensitive were the project engineers to the structures of environmental design that the only trees cut were those directly beneath the roadway."
